September Festivities: A Guide to Fun September Holidays

September is here! Summer is ending and passing the baton to Fall, my favorite season! We love celebrating all the holidays, big and small, so I put together this September Festivities: A Guide to Fun September Holidays handbook!

It’s September! Fall is just around the corner! Kids are back to school and the routine is getting back underway. In this crazy world that seems to be getting crazier by the day, I love celebrating all the fun little moments with my family that I can. The “National Day Of” celebrations are so much fun to celebrate and bring a lot of fun to the daily routines. I love to look at the list and see what will be the most fun to honor as we go into each month. It’s such a fun way to put a little pizazz and joy in our days, and I say the more joy and happiness, the better! Let’s dive into what we have to look forward to in the month of September!

National Holidays in September 2024

Labor Day

Labor Day is a federal holiday and it’s the first Monday of September, so the date changes each year. This holiday honors American workers for all of their hard work and for their achievements. I’ve always thought it was kind of funny that you get a day off to celebrate being a hard worker!

Find a recipe online that looks yummy and try some cherry popovers today. Popovers are super easy to make. You can make the batter in the blender! It doesn’t get easier than that!

World Coconut Day (September 2):

You need some coconut today if you like it! If there’s a coconut recipe you’ve been wanting to try, today’s your day! Or have a coconut water! Maybe try a recipe with coconut milk! Or, try these TruFru Chocolate-Covered Coconut Bites from the grocery store. You’re welcome in advance for that discovery!

National College Colors Day (September 3):

Football season is upon us! Wear your college colors today to support your team! Have some fun with it and go all out! The brighter the better! Have an in-house rivalry and see who’s team does the best in the next game day!

National Eat Extra Dessert Day (September 4):

What a yummy holiday! Extra dessert tonight! Or an extra dessert during the day today! It’s extra dessert day!

National Cheese Pizza Day (September 5):

Order up your favorite pizza place and get a cheese pizza! It’s National Cheese Pizza day so this calls for pizza night! (Pepperoni Lovers… go straight to September 20th! That’s your day!!)

National Read a Book Day (September 6):

Pick a book and get in some fun reading today for Read a Book Day. Read together as a family, or all together with your own books. Or totally on your own. Just get some reading in today. It’s my favorite pastime and I love getting lost in a good book.

National Acorn Squash Day (September 7):

This is an awesome chance to get your kids to try a new veggie! Go to the store and get a few acorn squash and look up some recipes to try. you can make acorn squash fries that turn out really tasty!! You can also make soup with them as well. And you can cook them with maple syrup and they are also really, REALLY good. This is a chance to get your picky eater to try new recipes for veggies!

International Literacy Day (September 8):

Celebrate Literacy today and spend some time with your kids reading, playing games, matching, writing, and creating crafts.

National Teddy Bear Day (September 9):

What a fun day! Teddy Bears get to go everywhere today! Host a teddy bear picnic if you want! Last year our neighborhood did a Teddy Bear Hunt and we all put random Teddy Bears in our windows and moved them around each day so that families could go for walks and count the teddy bears!

National TV Dinner Day (September 10):

I LOVED a TV dinner when I was little. I thought if I got to have a kid’s cuisine for dinner I was really something special! Let your kids pick one out to try and have them on the tv tray in front of the TV. Or if you want, do what we did and get some TV dinner tray plates and use them a few times a week. We absolutely love them!

Patriot Day (September 11)

September 11 is a day none of us will forget. Lots of people like to celebrate by committing acts of service and kindness on this day. However you want to use the day to reflect is up to you.

National Grandparents Day (September 12):

Tell your grandparents how much you love and appreciate them today! Have the kids make a fun craft and mail it and/or deliver it in person to the grandparents!

National Peanut Day (September 13):

This day calls for peanuts! Get some in the shells and teach the kids how to crack them. Or if you prefer less mess, just have some peanuts in a jar to celebrate National Peanut Day! Maybe try a few different flavors and types and have a taste testing activity!

National Cream-filled Donut Day (September 14):

If you are a fan of cream-filled donuts, today is your day!! And if not, still go get a donut today! Some of the cream-filled donuts are so decadent and delicious! Try a new combo that you’ve never had and you might just be surprised how delicious it is!

National Double Cheeseburger Day (September 15):

Today calls for cheeseburgers!!! Make them super thin and everyone can make their “double” cheeseburger for the big night!

National Play-Doh Day (September 16):

Get out all of the Play-Doh and Play-Doh toys today and go to town! We have a Play-Doh barber shop that I can’t wait to get out and play with on this day!

National Apple Dumpling Day (September 17):

Apple dumplings are just so delicious! If you have a favorite recipe, make it today! If you don’t have a favorite recipe, try this one. It has a surprise ingredient but it makes them WONDERFUL!

National Rice Krispy Treat Day (September 18):

What a glorious day! Rice Krispy treats are delicious any day of the week, but we must celebrate them today! Make some fresh ones and have them warm or wait for them to cool. But have some!

National Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19):

It’s National Talk Like a Pirate Day, Matey! Make everyone talk like a pirate during dinner for some fun laughs and adventure!

National Pepperoni Pizza Day (September 20):

Pizza night! Grab a pepperoni pizza and celebrate this glorious pizza holiday!!

National Ice Cream Cone Day (September 22):

Ice cream cone day! Grab some cones at the store and get everyone’s favorite flavor of ice cream! Or go to the local ice cream parlor. Totally up to you! But today needs an ice cream cone!

National Miniature Golf Day (September 21):

This day calls for mini golf!!! Find a place in your town and go have a fun mini-golf day! It might need to wait for the weekend, but that would be a fun activity on a Fall afternoon!

National Great American Pot Pie Day (September 23):

Today needs a pot pie! Look up your favorite combo on Pinterest and make one for dinner. I love a traditional pot pie, but I also love a PIZZA pot pie! Try that out — it’s SO, SO good! And here’s a Supermom Shuffles Cooking recipe for a 20-minute quick and easy Chicken Pot Pie!

National Punctuation Day (September 24):

English teachers unite! What a glorious day! Find some funny stories to share with your school-age children about punctuation and why it matters!

National Comic Book Day (September 25):

Have everyone talk about their favorite comic book character and look at some comic books today. There are also tons of fun printables you can get online that can be cut out and stapled like comic books after you color them!

National Johnny Appleseed Day (September 26):

Read a story all about Johnny Appleseed today and share with your kids all about the history of Johnny Appleseed and apples! Here’s a wonderful kid reader about Johnny Appleseed book!

National Family Day (September 27):

Make this a family day, or at the least a fun family night. Plan on having a fun family dinner and watch a movie together or play some board games to spend time together. Supermom Shuffle has a Fun Family Activities Guide for each month as well. Here’s the September Fun Family Guide!

National Strawberry Cream Pie Day (September 28):

This is a delicious day if you like strawberries! There are a few frozen varieties of Strawberry Cream Pie, or if you like baking, you can try this Strawberry Cream Pie recipe!

National Coffee Day (September 29):

What a delightful holiday to celebrate! Treat yourself to your favorite coffee shop drink today to celebrate National Coffee Day.

National Hot Mulled Cider Day (September 30):

You got your coffee yesterday, today go get yourself a warm mulled cider. Starbucks spiced apple cider is AMAZING and tastes like Fall in a cup. Here’s a copycat recipe for the Starbucks Caramel Apple Cider. It’s just so delicious!

Wrap-Up: September Festivities: A Guide to Fun September Holidays

September is one of my favorite months. It’s still summery weather, but there’s a hint of Fall here and there, and of course, Fall actually begins in September on the 22nd! Everyone is mostly back to school now and the routines are getting back in place. Fall is my favorite season, so I’m looking forward to putting out all of my decorations and seeing the leaves start to change. I hope you enjoy these fun little holidays to celebrate throughout September! These fun little celebrations bring some joy to the table and let you have some fun!
