Happy July!! Summer is moving right along!! I just love summer! It’s warm (ok, it’s HOT), there’s lots of swimming, longer days, more relaxed schedules and lots of play! There’s time for playing after dinner, or taking a walk! There’s time for running through sprinklers and swimming, too! This month’s Family Time section is full of all kinds of fun ideas, activities, movies, conversations and more! Summertime is such a fun time and I’m super excited for the 4th of July celebrations this year! Happy July!

Importance of Family Time
A happy family is always super important to me and the value of family time cannot be overstated. Regular family nights as well as general family time are really important and strengthen your family bond. It’s a good idea to spend time together with the entire family regularly because it’s key to the development of your kids, and it boosts your general well-being also! It’s a fundamental part of offering emotional support, sharing triumphs, and navigating through challenges.

When To Have Family Night
Any night is fine for family night. You’ll want to do it on a night when there are no other activities planned. It is supposed to be a fun night, not something you stress about fitting into the schedules. Make the time and do the family nights regularly. It’s one of the best things in life, and you don’t want to miss it! I think Friday night is kind of fun to do them on so we don’t have to worry about homework or it being a school night. Try out some different times and see what works best for your family.
July Family Night Guide
Conversation Starters:
Use these for the dinner table or a longer car ride. Have fun with it and play along too! There are also cards to follow if you want to cut them out and put them in a jar and pick one each day!
July Conversation Starters
- July 1 is “Create Your Own Ice Cream Flavor” day. What would your creation be?
- July 4 is Independence Day. What’s your favorite thing about July 4 celebrations?
- July 7 is National Chocolate Day. Would you rather have chocolate at every meal for the rest of your life or never have it again?
- July 15 is Cow Appreciation Day. What are some cool things to know about cows?
- July 18 is National Sour Candy Day. Do you like sour candy? Why or why not? What’s your favorite kind?
- The Summer Olympics start this month. What’s your favorite event in the Summer Olympics?
- If you were an athlete in the Olympic Games, what would you compete in?
- In the Olympics, the diving competition platforms are as high as 10 meters. That’s almost 33 feet high. Would you want to jump off a diving board that tall?
- What’s your favorite Olympic sport to watch?
- July 25 is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day! What’s your favorite way to top a hot fudge sundae?
- July 21 is National Hot Dog Day. What is your favorite way to eat a hot dog?
- There are lots of parades on July 4th. Would you rather march in a parade or watch the parade from the sides?
- Do you like fireworks? Why or why not?
- What is your favorite way to cool off on a hot summer day?
- Lots of people travel during the summer. If you could travel any way you wanted to, how would you travel? By boat? Train? Car? Plane?
- Do you like super hot weather or super cold weather better?
- If you went camping, would you want to sleep in a tent? Or in a cabin?
- Lemonade is a super popular summer drink. Do you like it? Why or why not?
Printable Cards
If you sign up for the free March guide, there are printable cards you can print out. I love to print them on cardstock, cut them out, fold them up, and put them in a jar. Then each night at dinner you can draw a conversation starter and everyone gets to answer the question each day. You can modify it for little kids or big kids as best suits your family’s needs.

Family Game Night is such a fun way to connect! Here’s a list of games we think are great fun for April and Springtime! Some of these will require a little more work and prep than a regular board game, but are much fun for the season. Search Google/Pinterest for the idea for exact instructions!

Family Theme Nights:
This is one of my favorite ideas. Family theme night is so much fun. Here’s what you do:
Pick a theme and go with it for a fun family night! There’s one for each week in February plus extras!! Some of these fun night ideas are more involved than others. The sky is the limit, so go for it and have some fun. (PS – As a side effect – trying some of these new ideas might even help your child expand their diet and try new foods!)
4th of July
Do a 4th of July night up big! Cookout and have hamburgers and hot dogs. You’ll need apple pie! Then go watch some fireworks or get some sparklers to do in your own backyard! (Be sure to check your own state/county fireworks laws though! And be careful!!)
Christmas in July
I love this one!!! Play Christmas carols, throw on some Christmas shirts, make some Christmas cookies, and even make a meal like what you’d have for Christmas dinner or lunch. If you are feeling it, maybe everyone gets a small gift or makes everyone a small gift. Watch a Christmas movie or special on TV and snuggle up under the blankets.
Halfway Night
July 2 is the halfway point in the calendar year (Unless it’s a leap year…). I say re-create New Year’s Eve and have a mini-ball drop. (It doesn’t have to be midnight though! Maybe on the Halfway night the ball drops at, say, 9pm!) Really get into the theme and serve halves of food. A half sandwich, half baked potato, half a piece of cake or cookie, etc. Write new resolutions and have a fun night!
Lemon Night
This month’s theme is “When Life Hands You Lemons…”, so have a lemon night. Pick a recipe from the cookbook and have dinner with lemons, dessert with lemons, and some lemonade! It’s all lemon tonight! You could make lemon sorbet as well! That’s a great activity for the kids. Keep them busy squeezing lemons! Just remember to strain for seeds!
Olympics Night
This would work for a few nights! Pick a night of sports you want to watch as a family. Make sheets for everyone to keep track and pick their favorite country or athlete to watch! You can check in each night to see how everyone is doing and who wins the most! This is a fun and friendly competition in the house that lasts a few weeks!
Something New Night
How FUN! Everything has to be new tonight. A new dinner recipe, a new movie, a new game, a new activity. New new new!! You could try new fruits and veggies, a new kind of dessert or go explore a new place today.
Cooking Class Night
Find an online family cooking class and get everyone some aprons! It’s family fun and dinner is being made at the same time. Bonus? Your kids might try new foods because they got to help make them! There are tons of ideas on YouTube and actual paid classes you can take online as well!
Popsicle Stick Craft Night
Instead of gingerbread houses, think popsicle stick houses! And all kinds of other popsicle stick crafts! Check out Pinterest and Google for ideas! Bonus – have popsicles for dessert!
Safari Night
Decorate the house in a safari theme! Have safari food and watch some safari movies or specials on tv! The theme is safari for everything tonight. Everyone can dress the part too! And learn about animals and the area they live in as well. Such a fun night!
