I think you should celebrate all kinds of love on Valentine’s Day, and what more fun way than with your whole family? As a matter of fact, let’s just go ahead and celebrate love all month long! Let’s jump right into our fun family night ideas for February.

Importance of Family Time

A happy family is always super important to me and the value of family time cannot be overstated. Regular family nights as well as general family time are really important and strengthen your family bond. It’s a good idea to spend time together with the entire family regularly because it’s key to the development of your kids, and it boosts your general well-being also! It’s a fundamental part of offering emotional support, sharing triumphs, and navigating through challenges.

When To Have Family Night

Any night is fine for family night. You’ll want to do it on a night when there are no other activities planned. It is supposed to be a fun night, not something you stress about fitting into the schedules. Make the time and do the family nights regularly. It’s one of the best things in life, and you don’t want to miss it! I think Friday night is kind of fun to do them on so we don’t have to worry about homework or it being a school night. Try out some different times and see what works best for your family.

Conversation Starters:

These are so much fun. Use them all month long! You can use the conversation starters regularly at the dinner table with your family members or even on a longer car ride. Have fun with it and play along too! It’s truly a great way to get the conversation flowing!

Here’s February’s conversation starters:

  • What’s your favorite Valentine’s candy? Chocolate or sweet candy?
  • Name 3 things you love…
  • Name a place you LOVE to go…
  • What are some good ways to show people you love them?
  • What’s the food you most LOVE?
  • What makes you feel the most loved?
  • If you could go anywhere right now, where would you choose?
  • What message would you put on a conversation heart?
  • What do you love about yourself?
  • I think Valentine’s Day is a good day to…
  • Go around the table and tell each person one thing you love about them.
  • Everyone deserves to be loved because…
  • I love ______ more than anything else in the world.
  • The best Valentine’s Day ever would be…
  • How can you make others feel special on Valentine’s Day?
  • Do you like to make a Valentine’s card? Or buy a card?
  • My favorite Valentine’s Day tradition is…
  • If I were Cupid, I would…
  • Cake or candy?
  • People love me because…

Printable Cards

If you sign up for the free February guide, there are printable cards you can print out. I love to print them on cardstock, cut them out, fold them up, and put them in a jar. Then each night at dinner you can draw a conversation starter and everyone gets to answer the question each day. You can modify it for little kids or big kids as best suits your family’s needs.

Family Theme Nights:

This is one of my favorite ideas. Family theme night is so much fun. Here’s what you do:

Pick a theme and go with it for a fun family night! There’s one for each week in February plus extras!! Some of these fun night ideas are more involved than others. The sky is the limit, so go for it and have some fun. (PS – As a side effect – trying some of these new ideas might even help your child expand their diet and try new foods!)

Pink Breakfast

Everything must be pink! Pink pancakes, pink eggs, pink muffins, pink fruit! You name it, it has to be pink or it doesn’t get to come to this breakfast! You may need a little help from some food coloring for some of the menu items. Go all out and get pink cups and paper plates and forks to go with the theme!

Fancy Valentine’s Dinner

Instead of going out to eat for Valentine’s Day (especially this year!), have everyone put on their best outfit and serve a fancy dinner. Use cloth napkins, set a fancy table, turn off the cell phones, and enjoy a nice Valentine’s Dinner as a family.

Paint Party Night

Everyone gets a canvas and paints and you all have a paint party together! Just like those paint parties you can pay to go to — you can do this one in your own house in your pajamas! There are tons of guided videos on YouTube these days! Like, you can watch actual step-by-step instructional youtube videos. It’s awesome.

Dance Party Night

Use a karaoke machine or videos on YouTube and have your own dance and karaoke party! Let the kids pick songs for you to sing or dance to and watch the hilarity ensue. It’s the perfect opportunity to take some updated family videos!

Superbowl Party

For the Superbowl, make all fun snack foods all day long and play fun games all day in honor of the Superbowl tonight! Let the kids watch the commercials and play board games and card games while the game is on to keep little folks entertained.

Superhero Night

Everyone picks a superhero and assumes their identity for the night. Make yourself a mask and cape and wear a costume for the evening. Serve superhero snacks and drinks and watch a fun superhero movie!

Book Night

You can do this night over and over again, with a different book each time! Pick a book, read it together and then plan dinner and the night around it. Try “Green Eggs and Ham”, “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”, “If You Give a Pig a Pancake”, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, “Dragons Love Tacos” or “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”

Family Movie Night

Need some fresh ideas for Family Movie Night? Here are some that match the Valentine’s season! Check out the movie beforehand to make sure there’s nothing to scare your kids! There are suggestions for older kids and younger kids!
