Importance of Family Time

A happy family is always super important to me and the value of family time cannot be overstated. Regular family nights as well as general family time are really important and strengthen your family bond. It’s a good idea to spend time together with the entire family regularly because it’s key to the development of your kids, and it boosts your general well-being also! It’s a fundamental part of offering emotional support, sharing triumphs, and navigating through challenges.

When To Have Family Night

Any night is fine for family night. You’ll want to do it on a night when there are no other activities planned. It is supposed to be a fun night, not something you stress about fitting into the schedules. Make the time and do the family nights regularly. It’s one of the best things in life, and you don’t want to miss it! I think Friday night is kind of fun to do them on so we don’t have to worry about homework or it being a school night. Try out some different times and see what works best for your family.

Family Theme Nights:

This is one of my favorite ideas. Family theme night is so much fun. Here’s what you do:

Pick a theme and go with it for a fun family night! There’s one for each week in February plus extras!! Some of these fun night ideas are more involved than others. The sky is the limit, so go for it and have some fun. (PS – As a side effect – trying some of these new ideas might even help your child expand their diet and try new foods!)

Pizza Bar Night

April 5 is National Deep Dish Pizza Day. Have a pizza bar night where everyone gets to make their own pizzas with their own toppings. Make or split dough into crusts for each person to have their very own pizza!

Living Room Picnic

April 23 is National Picnic Day. If you can’t go outdoors, have a picnic in your living room floor. Put out lots of blankets and pillows and serve picnic food for dinner!

Beach Party Night

The weather is getting better and it might be time to go to the beach soon. But I say, why wait?! Have a noise machine or your phone play beach/ocean sounds in the background. Cook or order up some seafood for dinner. Bring beach chairs into the living room and watch a video of the ocean. Decorate with your beach towels! Everyone wears sunglasses! Just like a day a the beach!

Sundae Bar Night

This is such a fun night! Get several flavors of ice cream and all the toppings you can think of. And not just hot fudge sauce and sprinkles. Think candy like nerds, M&M’s, gummy bears, chocolate chips — the works! Think about anything you might find at those frozen yogurt bars and include the fun things your family would eat! Let everyone make their own sundae and everyone enjoy together!

Un-Birthday Day

Make a birthday cake that isn’t for any one person. Have everyone’s favorite meal (if possible) and act as if it’s a birthday party. But it’s no one’s actual birthday! Get some balloons and hang up some signs. This is a super fun night to celebrate just an every day Tuesday!

Rainbow Dinner Night

Have a meal that includes every color of the rainbow! Think blueberries for blue/purple, mangoes or yellow peppers for yellow. Red could be tomato-based recipes. If you want to be more simple, you could just do rainbow fruit salad and have cherries, oranges, mango, kiwi or green grapes, blueberries, and plums. If you wanted to do dinner you could do spaghetti and salad, followed by fruit salad for dessert!

Popcorn Bar

This is super similar to ice cream bar! Put out different flavorings and items you can mix in with your popcorn. Let everyone make their own preferred mix and settle in for a show or movie!

Royal Night

Girls get tiaras! Guys get king crowns! Everyone is royal for the night. We dress with our fancy clothes for dinner and wear our best jewels! Dinner should be on the nice dishes (or fancy paper plates!) and everyone uses their best manners!

Cooking Class

Find an online family cooking class you can all take together! Get the laptop or ipad set up in the kitchen, get all your ingredients ready and follow the directions! The kids will be excited to eat it because they helped make it! Let the kids do as much as they can so they feel extra helpful!
